Who Are We?
United
Synagogue Youth (USY) and Kadima
are organizations for Jewish teens and pre-teens from across the area and
across the country to meet each other, hang out together, and make lifelong
friendships while learning about and experiencing Judaism. USY and Kadima
are the youth groups associated with the United Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism. USY is open to all high school students (grades 9-12); Kadima is
open to middle school students (grades 6-8).
USY and Kadima are divided into three levels: the chapter, the region, and
international. Our chapters, Teaneck USY
and Teaneck Kadima, include people from
our area who get together many times throughout the year for many different
activities, including programming with a social, religious, education,
social action, or Israel focus. Our region, Hagalil Region, is composed of
chapters from Central and North New Jersey. The international level is made
of 17 regions from all over the United States and Canada.
USY is a peer-run organization, with leaders elected and selected from the
chapter membership. These leaders, working on the Chapter Executive Board
and Chapter General Board, work with the chapter adviser to plan, execute,
and follow-up on all USY events.
USY and Kadima offer opportunities throughout the year to get together with
other USY members from the region and around the world. USY holds five
conventions (kinnusim) during the year; Kadima has three conventions. Each
is a great opportunity to spend time with friends, meet new people, and
experience an uplifting Shabbat in a comfortable environment.
USY also holds an annual international convention, to be held this coming
year in Boston, as well as two wonderful summer program options: USY on
Wheels, a 6 ½-week cross-country tour, and USY Israel Pilgrimage, with
options to Poland, Spain, or Eastern Europe, all of which study Jewish life,
yesterday and today, in Europe and in Israel.

Halpern, Teaneck USY adviser/youth director.
